極體是卵子生成產生卵子的過程，產生的單倍體細胞，但一般來說並無受精的能力。當動物中特定的雙胞體細胞減數分裂後進行細胞質分裂，進而生成卵子時，他們有時候會分裂得不平均。通常大部分的細胞質會集中到一個子細胞，變成卵子或卵細胞，另一個極體則會分到少量的細胞質。極體通常會死亡(細胞凋零)會消失，但有時候極體仍會存在，並且在生物體的生命週期扮演重要角色。
