Euphorbia thymifolia is a plant of Euphorbia genus in the Euphorbiaceae family.

Characteristics

It is an annual herb. The stalk is creeped or slanted against the ground, and covered with fine hair. The petiole is 0.4~0.8mm long. Besides, the whole plant contains latex.

The leaves are obovate to lanceolate with a range of size 3~7.8 mm long,2~4.7 wide. The petiole is 0.4~0.8mm long. The base is truncate and skewed, and the apex is blunt or round with a small cusp. The edge is serrated. The color on the leaf top is green and light green with grey underneath.

Flowers are axillary or terminal. They are cyme. Flowers are dense and small, which are surrounded by red-purple sepals. It’s about 0.1cm long. There are 4 glands that are funnel-shapes and green. Unisexual flower without perianth. Male and female flowers are born together in the involucrum. The flowering time is from March to October.

The fruit is capsule, ovate-triangular with coarse hairs. It’s about 0.15cm long, and the seed is smooth or has 5~6 longitudinal grooves on it.

Location

Euphorbia thymifolia is distributed in subtropical, tropical, Taiwanese and mainland China, Yunnan, Guangdong, Hainan, Guangxi, Zhejiang, Hunan, Fujian, Jiangsu, Jiangxi and other places. They grow in the region of 430 meters to 1600 meters above sea level. The plants can generally be found by the road side, grasses, sandy soils.

Uses

The plants can be used to eliminate swelling, mites and detoxification.
