Subject: Meteor Motor Car Co. Ambulance Model #76-481 (info taken from this vehicle's VIN plate), a 1948 Cadillac-based ambulance, originally owned and operated by the Edwards Funeral Home in Dobbs Ferry, NY (USA). Purchased in 1962 by the newly formed Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Ambulance Corps (see: www.DFVAC.org). The vehicle was owned by the Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Ambulance Corps at the time this photo was taken. The ambulance is a 1948 Cadillac 76 Series on a factory 163" Commercial Chassis (vs. the standard 136" chassis); Cadillac shipped the "base vehicle" in 1948 to coach builder Meteor Motor Car Co. in Piqua, OH. who outfitted it as an ambulance. Thus, the VIN tag for this vehicle reads "Meteor Motor Car Co."
See http://www.1948Cadillac.blogspot.com[失效链接] for a full portfolio of photos of the 1948 Dobbs Ferry Ambulance today. The actual vehicle shown in this photo was re-discovered in October 2008 by a collector scouting a California salvage yard in the Mojave Desert (near Cinco, CA). The original "Dobbs Ferry Volunteer Ambulance Corps." signage is still clearly visible on the back door after 60 years. Also, the original etched glass marked "AMBULANCE" is also intact, and matches other historical photos of this same vehicle.
The Meteor Motor Car Co. existed from 1915 to 1954; in 1954 it was purchased by the Wayne Works, Inc. Two years later, Wayne Works, Inc. also purchased coach builder A.J. Miller Company and by 1957 had merged the two acquisitions into "Miller-Meteor" (per: http://www.miller-meteor.com/history.asp).
