മലയാളം: ആയിരം കൈകളും പതിനൊന്ന് ശിരസ്സുകളുമുള്ള അവലോകിതേശ്വരൻ. പെൻസിൽ‌വേനിയ സർ‌വകലാശാലയുടെ കാഴ്ചബംഗ്ലാവിൽ പ്രദർശിപ്പിച്ചിരിക്കുന്ന 53 സെ.മി ഉയരമുള്ള, 18 നൂറ്റാണ്ടിലെ ഈ പിച്ചള വിഗ്രഹം ടിബറ്റിൽ നിന്നുള്ളതാണു. അവലോകിതേശ്വരനെന്ന ബോധിസത്വൻ ഭൂമിയിലെ സംസാരദുഃഖത്താൽ വലയുന്ന മനുഷ്യരെ നിർ‌വാണത്തിലേക്ക് നയിക്കാൻ അശ്രാന്തം പരിശ്രമിക്കുന്ന ദിവ്യശക്തിയായാണു ബുദ്ധമതത്തിൽ പരിഗണിക്കപ്പെടുന്നത്. ഈ അശ്രാന്തപരിശ്രമത്തിനിടയിൽ രണ്ട് കൈകളും നഷ്ടപ്പെട്ട ബോധിസത്വനു ബുദ്ധന്റെ അനുഗ്രഹത്താൽ ആയിരം കൈകളും പതിനൊന്ന് ശിരസ്സുകളും ലഭിക്കുന്നു. ഈ കൈകളിലോരോന്നിലും ഒരു നേത്രവും ഉണ്ടെന്നാണു സങ്കല്പം. ഇവയുടെ സഹായത്താൽ അവലോകിതേശ്വരൻ ഭൂമിയിലുള്ളവരെ ദുഃഖങ്ങളിൽ നിന്നു വിടുതൽ നൽകി മോക്ഷത്തിനു സഹായിക്കുന്നുവെന്നാണു ടിബറ്റ്, ചൈന, ജപ്പാൻ എന്നിവിടങ്ങളിലെ ബുദ്ധമതക്കാരുടെ വിശ്വാസം. English: Statue of the thousand-armed Avalokiteshwara, once displayed at the University of Pennsylvania Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology (Accession number A1440). This 53 cm tall brass statue from Tibet belongs to the 18th Century, depicts a bodhisattva form with 1000 arms and 11 heads. Inside each palm, the deity has an eye. The story behind the deity is that the bodhisattva, out of his profound compassion for the suffering earthly beings, struggled to help them attain nirvana. He tried reaching out to every earth-bound being and in the process lost both his hands. Seeing his plight, Buddha blessed him with eleven heads and a thousand arms each with eyes on it. Avalokitesvara is venerated in the thousand-armed form as the god of profound compassion in Tibetan, Chinese and Japanese Buddhism. |
