语言威望

语言威望是社会语言学中的一个概念，指一种语言变体（方言或者语言）同其他变体比起来“更有威望”，而且更有威望的语言变体往往就是标准方言。例如20世纪时，许多人认为英式英文与美式英文是比较“正统”的英文，这些人觉得其他英文变体就是“不正统”、“古怪”、“错”，加拿大英文会被美国人认为是英式英文，但同时又被一些欧洲人误以为是美式英文，甚至误以为有些用法根本就是用错了，而北美原住民英文同样被非原住民认为“格式写错”，非裔美国英文也被一些人认为是“低俗难登大雅之堂”。
