星云目录
星云目录（CN，Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters of Stars）是威廉·赫歇尔在他的妹妹卡洛琳协助下编撰而成的星云目录，在1786年首度出版。后来，由他的儿子约翰·赫歇尔的扩充成GC星表（星云和星团总表，General Catalogue of Nebulae and Clusters and Clusters of Stars）。CN和GC是J. L. E. Dreyer所编辑，目前仍被天文学家广泛使用的星云和星团新总表（NGC）的前身[1]。
历史
星云目录于1786年由威廉·赫歇尔首度在自然科学会报发表[2]。在1789年，他增入了1,000个天体[3]，在1802年再加入500个天体[4]，使天体总数达到2,500个。
在1864年，CN由他的儿子约翰·赫歇尔扩充成GC星表[5]。GC星表包含5,079天体。稍后，更完整刊登出来的谥作，称为General Catalogue of 10,300 Multiple and Double Stars，包含10,300个多星和双星天体[来源请求]。
在1878年，John Louis Emil Dreyer出版了增补的General Catalogue.[6]。在1886年，他建议建立GC的第二个增补版，但英国皇家天文学会要求Dreyer编辑一个新的版本，这导致1888年NGC天体表的出版[7]，之后在1895年两次扩充的IC星表[8] and 1908.[9]。
